Chapter Thirty-Three

The local fishermen were not singing as they headed for home later that morning.

They should have been happy. They would be with their families earlier than usual, and their catch of tuna had been magnificent.

But they were in sombre mood. None of the men in the five boats spoke a word. Thirty silent gloomy faces. Just the puttering of five engines and the shriek of the sea birds following them to shore.

The captain of the lead boat looked back at the huge silver blue fish lying in rows on deck. And then on top of them their latest horrific catch.

A man’s dead body, now wrapped in sailcloth out of respect.

He shook his head. Such a waste of a young life. And a handsome young man too – he could tell that in spite of all the terrible wounds. A European or Australian, he thought. Fair skinned and fair haired. With a stylish moustache.
